Getting a Phone Number
TalkChief offers three number types to match different business needs:- Local numbers — geographic numbers tied to a specific city or region, ideal for establishing a local presence and reducing the perceived cost for callers in that area.
- Toll-free numbers — freephone numbers (such as 800 or 1-800 prefixes) where your business absorbs the inbound call cost; well suited for customer service and support lines.
- International numbers — numbers in foreign countries that allow customers abroad to reach you at local rates, available across 90+ countries.
- Navigate to Phone → Numbers and click Get a Number.
- Select the country and, where applicable, the number type (local, toll-free) and region or area code.
- Choose a number from the available inventory and click Provision.
- Assign the number to a call flow, ring group, or user as part of the provisioning flow.
Number Portability
If you already have a phone number with another provider, you can bring it to TalkChief through the number portability process. Porting preserves your existing number so customers, partners, and printed materials stay accurate during the transition. Eligibility: Most geographic and toll-free numbers are eligible for porting, but eligibility depends on the originating country and your current provider’s policies. Vanity numbers and some mobile numbers may have additional restrictions. How the porting process works:- Submit a porting request — go to Phone → Numbers → Port a Number and enter your existing number and current provider details.
- Provide authorisation — you will need a Letter of Authorisation (LOA) and, in most cases, a copy of your most recent bill showing the number.
- Coordinate with your provider — TalkChief’s porting team liaises with your current carrier on your behalf. Typical port times range from a few business days to several weeks depending on the country and carrier.
- Test before cut-over — once the port date is confirmed, TalkChief will provision the number in your account in advance so you can configure routing and test call flows before the switch is live.
- Confirm the port — on the agreed date, your number moves to TalkChief and inbound calls begin routing through your new configuration automatically.
Do not cancel your current number with your existing provider before the port completes. Cancelling early may make the number unrecoverable.
Caller ID Options
Caller ID controls the number your recipients see when you call them outbound. TalkChief gives you four modes to match different use cases.Fixed Caller ID
Fixed Caller ID always presents the same number to every outbound call destination. Use this when brand consistency is the priority — for example, always showing your main office number regardless of which agent is placing the call.Shared Caller ID
Shared Caller ID assigns one outbound number to an entire team. All members of the team appear to call from the same number, making it easy for customers to call back a single line rather than individual direct numbers.Random Caller ID
Random Caller ID rotates outbound presentation across a pool of numbers you define. Each call in the pool uses a different number from the set. This is particularly useful for outbound dialling campaigns where repeatedly calling from the same number can reduce answer rates.Smart Dynamic Caller ID
Smart Dynamic Caller ID automatically selects the most appropriate number from your inventory based on the destination of each outbound call. For example, if you call a local number in Germany, TalkChief presents a German local number as your caller ID rather than your headquarters number in another country. This improves answer rates and gives customers a familiar, local number to call back.Caller ID presentation is subject to country-specific regulations. Some countries prohibit the presentation of numbers that are not registered to the calling party, and carriers in certain regions may override or withhold caller ID regardless of your settings. Number availability, portability timelines, and caller ID options all vary by jurisdiction — consult your TalkChief account manager or review local telecommunications authority guidelines before deploying caller ID configurations in regulated markets.
